Leanne Yoon, Solah Han, and Alyssa Chang May 3, 2022
DIS is awesome, but there’s one thing it hasn’t had since COVID started - a place where students can buy snacks. Now, the Jets have an awesome place to buy and sell delicious snacks again. On April 1st, the long-awaited Snack Shack was opened. Students crowded around the new addition to the facility, excited to take part in the opening ceremony. Eighth grader Solah cut the ribbon, and marked the start of the celebration. Glider and the Student Athletic Advisor Committee (SAAC) members handed out ice pops to the students who crowded around the Snack Shack. Participants appreciated the frosty, sweet goodness on a chilly day in April.

Student Votes Matter With the Morning Calm Medal

Kevin Lim, Leewen Wang, Jade Lee, and Alyssa Chang April 21, 2022
DIS implemented a brand-new program to encourage kids to get into the world of novels – the Morning Calm Medal. According to our school librarian, the Morning Calm Medal is an annual book award selected by international school students all around Korea since 2012. Each year, librarians across Korea nominate a range of books for the prize. In April, students are able to give their own input on the winners, as they vote on their favorite books in each category. Participating pupils read the nominated books, share their thoughts and comment online and in-person, and finally, vote on their favorite books. Once all of the ballots are counted, schools award the Morning Calm Medal to the winning authors in each of the four categories (lower elementary, upper elementary, middle school, and high school).

On the first of April, the 5th graders led by Ms. Morissette presented their big projects to the entire school. As part of their social studies unit, the bright young stars of DIS brought together their research on various topics related to human rights, such as corporate human rights violations, historic advancements and setbacks within the topic, or even student’s prerogatives at DIS. The presentation was a massive success as it resonated with teachers, admins, and other students.

Field Trips of the Past, and Current Stand-Ins

Leewen Wang, Luna Kang, and Alyssa Chang March 7, 2022
Before the pandemic, DIS hosted a diversity of fun-filled events off-campus: ranging from vacations at Jeju and ski trips to visits at museums and art galleries. The community looked forward to the days in the school year where friends and teachers could go off-campus and have a blast. But ever since COVID took hold of Korea, field trips have been–and still are–off-limits.

Sarah Lee and Alyssa Chang March 3, 2022
The campus has undergone a massive glow-up throughout the school year, but it’s not over yet. Our school is building a snack shack (a working title for the facility) in front of the cafeteria. Both this location and the gym will be renamed by DIS students.
