Summer break is just around the corner—and so returns the itch for more music to fill the void. To unlock more potential and enjoy your break, here’s a 15-track playlist that meshes perfectly with the diverse vibes of summer. I highlight the top six.

Surfer - 다브다 (Dabda)

The best summer days begin with the break of bright sunlight. Through the classic recipe—a semi-polished mix of clean guitars, relaxed melodies, and plenty of reverb—the airy sound of 다브다’s “Surfer” paints an optimistic picture of a fine morning.

The song also introduces Slowdive-esque ambience in the latter half. Soaked in not only reverb but also echo, the atmospheric end puts the cherry on top.

파도 (Wave) - 새소년 (Bird Boy)

This song has a more reckless flair. Almost every component builds around a seriously funky rhythm; no instrument plays in complete unison with another, as they constantly add cheeky variations and fills. The minimal production polish allows the funk to crash like a refreshing breeze. A reference to its name, the track rides the wave of summer activities.

늪지대 (Swamp) - 공중도둑 (Mid-air Thief)

Out of all in the playlist, Swamp stands alone. It presents an utterly beautiful collage of floaty vocals accompanied by the warm, woody plucks from a nylon-string guitar and intricate bird chirps, playground swing creaks, and water droplets.

By challenging norms of musical textures, this song serves not only as a background for a peaceful afternoon but as an avant-garde piece that will accentuate the beauty of the mundane.

Delispice, the epitome of the 2000s Korean alternative rock scene, brings summer all the way from the blazing hot streets of Busan to the swampy concrete jungle of Seoul. (Olivia Park)

챠우챠우 (Chow chow) - 델리스파이스 (Delispice)

Classics are classics for a reason. The well-celebrated “zero-th” generation K-indie anthem, Chow Chow, possesses a specific atmosphere unlike any other. Within the first minute, the listener nosedives into a memory spiral with the buzz of cicadas, dimming sunlight, and sweaty polo shirts against the lukewarm breeze.

Try Chow Chow when you yearn for nostalgia. In the backdrop of a steamy sunset or a dim, rainy afternoon, the song comes alive.

세이수미 (Say Sue Me) - Let It Begin

This song encapsulates the characteristic purple crispiness of a summer evening. Content more than playful, and comfort over thrill, “Let It Begin” evokes the aesthetics of a faded Polaroid picture.

Say Sue Me’s sound strays away from conventional approaches to building atmosphere. Instead, they utilize a unique combination of clear articulation reminiscent of surf-rock and distorted drones like that of a 90s shoegaze track.

검정치마 (The Black Skirts) - Flying Bobs

Like the quiet twilight that follows the crispy evening, “Flying Bobs” is gloomy and murky. The track begins with a digitally voiced narration about the life of 17-year-old Jo Hyu-il on a summer night of 1999. Then it explodes into a vivid auditory exploration of Jo’s struggle as an undiscovered musician, the odd beauty of the struggle accentuated throughout.

If you wish to elevate the moody atmosphere of a summer night, “Flying Bobs” breathes for you.
