Science enthusiasts from all over the nation gather for the secondary SKAC STEM Fair

Middle and high students from various schools of the Southern Korean Activities Conference (SKAC) gathered at DIS to participate in the final round of the STEM Fair on Dec 2. This year’s fair occurred in-person after long years of virtual fairs. Through winning individual school competitions, researchers received qualification to progress to this final event. DIS contestants who secured at least second place in their respective categories earned the ticket to participate in the competition.
The starch experiment gains popularity as students wait for their turn to give it a go. The line gathers a whole crowd of elementary school students.

Elementary students participated in the first round of the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fair at DIS on Nov. 9. After a long day of judging, four nominated winners, fourth-graders Arthur Silva and Stella Park, and fifth-graders Daniel Kim and Gaby Kim, progressed to the SKAC finals at Gyeongnam International Foreign School (GIFS) on Nov. 29.

First round STEM Fair serves as launchpad for a chance at SKAC

Middle and high school Jets demonstrated their knowledge at the annual STEM Fair on November 9th. In this showcase of academic research, students researched, conducted experiments, and proved their hypotheses on display boards and exhibits. Grades 6 to 12 submitted around eighty projects in categories ranging from mathematics to engineering. 
Project-based learning allows students to develop their creative abilities along with expanding knowledge. Custom illustration by Solah Han.

The Key to Keep Kids Conscious in Classrooms

Methods of education constantly evolve and improve. Still today, professionals study effective academic programs that can maximize student learning. Though individuals differ case by case, some academically proven ways enhance comprehension. Personally, I find these three tools productive with all subjects: projects, experiments, and interactive lectures.

The elementary school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Fair gave rise to future scientists in the Jetnasium on November 9th. Students dabbled in the scientific method, and older, more experienced contestants developed their research and experimentation skills with a new creative project, such as a miniature catapult. It was, in fact, rocket science.

New Lunch Club Makes Headlines

Recently, a lunch club made headlines by appearing on a Channel A News documentary. KISBC, which stands for Korea International Synthetic Biology Cooperative, was created by junior Matthew Lee, whose lunch club earned local media attention and praise.
