South Korea has seen a sharp decline in elementary schools since the early 2000s. Of the 120 elementary schools that shut down nationwide in the past five years, closures have been concentrated in regions hit hardest by demographic decline and limited resources.

Students strolled through a vine-archway, eager to sneak a peak at campus renovations and upgrades. The 2024-2025 year started in the midst of record-high summer temperatures on Monday, August 12th. Kindergarteners made lifelong memories as they embarked on their DIS journey. Seniors donned custom varsity jackets to mark their last first day of school.

Taiwan Exchange Program: DIS goes overseas

The gates open as eager students land in Taoyuan International Airport. They take the bus to Asia American International Academy (AAIA), DIS’ sister school. After a week in Korea as homestay guests, AAIA reciprocated and invited ninth graders to Taiwan to experience life in a new academic, cultural environment during spring break.
Although largely homogeneous, many international schools portray a different picture on their advertisements to attract potential clients.

International school websites flaunt a harmonious mix of multiethnic students mingled together. But walk the halls of Korean international school campuses and something strikes you: the stark difference between expectation and reality. In truth, Koreans comprise up to 80% of the student body in international schools nationwide. This contrast arises from tokenism, a marketing technique that feigns diversity to attract naive potential attendees.

Daegu’s greatest green thumb receives high honor

As flowers bloom and birds chirp, spring arrives in Korea. To welcome the green season, elementary farmers, led by DIS Facilities Manager Mr. Bae, nourished the Early Childhood Center (ECC) gardens once more. Mr. Bae takes on this project each fall and spring to correspond with the growing season. Through consistent hard work, Mr. Bae and DIS received the Daegu Mayor Award for the success of the school vegetable gardens.

DIS hosted the annual Daegu World Thinking Day in the Jetnasium on Saturday, March 9. DIS, Camp Walker, and Korea Girl Scout troops came together to meet one another, create meaningful friendships, share cherished traditions, and empower girls and young women in the community.
