The DIS music and art department combined forces to celebrate a successful school year on May 30th with the middle and high school Spring Fine Arts Festival. Excited audiences packed the lively Jetnasium to enjoy a night of grand symphonies on the elevated stage and intricate student exhibitions. Much-missed DIS graduates made a surprise appearance at the event and caught up with peers and teachers alike. The art department’s annual fashion show, the Bloom, also returned with a brand new theme - eras of spring. Advisors Mr.Gum and Mr.Hutchings wrapped up the long night with tearful goodbyes to the 2024 seniors and applauded their hard work and diligence. Audiences returned home with fond memories to reminisce over the summer.

“We’re coming back every year forever,” wrote Paul Klein, the lead singer of LANY on his Instagram story, with the city of Seoul tagged. South Korea left Paul Klein and Jake Goss, members of LANY, an everlasting impression on the night of Aug. 22. The name emphasizes the artists’ passion for spreading their music all across Los Angeles (LA) to New York (NY), but this summer, their tunes disseminated all across the globe. We ventured up to catch this show last month, and here’s our take.

Middle and High School Students Cap Off the Year with the Spring Fine Arts Festival

DIS hosted the Middle/High School Spring Fine Arts Festival to commemorate the end of the year. For this event, students in art and music classes prepared performances and displayed the projects that they perfected during second semester. Mr. Hutchings and Mr. Gum organized the event together, each in charge of the music and art departments respectively.

Middle Schoolers Take on a Musical Challenge

Young musicians traveled to Korea International School Pangyo to put on a masterful performance. On April 11th, the Korean International Music Education Association (KIMEA) held its annual Middle School Honor Band Festival. After months of hard work, young maestros shared their talents, made new connections, and pursued their passions at the event. Over 200 participants from ten different schools gathered for a memorable experience.

The Next Generation of the K-indie Scene Arrives in Seoul

Last summer, my friend invited me to catch an underground indie band called Wave to Earth. Though at first I felt skeptical, their music completely enchanted me after just one listen. Unlike the usual K-pop music that many Koreans are familiar with, the songs they performed were unedited and expressive. Each performer mastered their instruments so well, it sounded like they ate CDs for breakfast. We even got a serendipitous chance to meet them backstage, and after hanging out with the members in person, I officially declared myself a huge fan.
