Young scholars renew their passion for storytelling

Aram Kim, a passionate children’s book author and illustrator, visited DIS to inspire young writers in grades K-2 in the burst of September sunshine. Her presence gifted elementary students an opportunity to dive into the world of literature and meet an actual author in person, rather than a face on the back cover of a book. She pens stories that embrace traditional Korean customs, and her work inspires kids to connect with and ponder upon their cultural identity.

Teachers Dive into Korean Literature

Five teachers cozied up one Wednesday afternoon in November, filled with excitement to read a book about Korean culture. Fifth-grade teacher Ms. Morisette launched the Professional Learning Community (PLC), which is a book club with the goal of reading Korean literature (translated into English) and incorporating the texts within their classroom lessons. It consists of a cross-curricular group of teachers from elementary to middle and high school, all determined to give DIS students a sense of familiarity in classrooms.

Apple’s Take on Hoover’s Bestseller: It Ends With Us

Apple Jun, Jodie Lee, Jessica Woo, and Jade Lee October 6, 2022
Colleen Hoover spiked in popularity at the start of the pandemic when her 2016 book, It Ends With Us, steadily climbed the New York Times bestseller list. At last, in January of this year, it hit the top of the list, finally becoming a #1 New York Times bestseller. Despite being a romance novel, It Ends With Us takes the genre to a whole new level, approaching love from a distinct angle that brings the reader to tears.

Student Votes Matter With the Morning Calm Medal

DIS implemented a brand-new program to encourage kids to get into the world of novels – the Morning Calm Medal. According to our school librarian, the Morning Calm Medal is an annual book award selected by international school students all around Korea since 2012. Each year, librarians across Korea nominate a range of books for the prize. In April, students are able to give their own input on the winners, as they vote on their favorite books in each category. Participating pupils read the nominated books, share their thoughts and comment online and in-person, and finally, vote on their favorite books. Once all of the ballots are counted, schools award the Morning Calm Medal to the winning authors in each of the four categories (lower elementary, upper elementary, middle school, and high school).

If You Wrote a Book, What Would it be About?

Harry Cho and Justin Park March 21, 2022
Every person has their own story. Even within DIS, many students hold varying opinions and interests in different subjects. Have you ever thought to yourself, “Ah, I could write a book about that.” ? Well, we’ve been going around the campus asking people that exact question wondering how diverse the students’ and staff members’ thought processes are.

Jessica Woo’s Book Review: Dress Coded

Jessica Woo and Alyssa Chang December 2, 2021
“Hello, Fisher Middle School and beyond. My name is Molly Frost, and this is DressCoded: A Podcast.” Everything changes with one audio episode hosted by the protagonist. The book I am reviewing today is Carrie Firestone’s “Dress Coded”, a novel that truly encapsulates the meaning of courage.

Binding Books and Building Bonds

Authors exist across all ages, and the proof is right here at DIS – our kindergarten students are already wordsmiths in their own right. In fact, on November 11th, our very own kindergarteners opened a functional bookshop to show off their self-written short stories. First grade friends were invited to the event as buyers, while school administrators Mrs. Jolly, Mr. Jolly and Mr. Seward visited, along with first grade teacher Ms. Suozzo.
