Whisking modern fusion cuisine into the rigid kitchens of Joseon, “Bon Appétit, Your Majesty” surged into the global top 10 after its release on Aug. 23, 2025 — driven by its focus on culture, emotional depth and standout performances.
The show opens in 2025, as chef Ji-yeong Yeon, played by Yoon-ah Im, reaches the height of her career with Korean-French fusion dishes. She then travels back in time to the Joseon era during the reign of King Yeonsangun, known for authoritarian rule and a sharp palate.
Her skill earns her the role of palace chef, and her spontaneous menus anchor the show’s appeal. Among all her creations, one dish in particular left a lasting impression—butter bibimbap with gochujang. Not only does it look flavorful, but it also has a twist to the taste, replacing traditional sesame oil with French beurre noisette (brown butter).
Butter bibimbap with gochujang takes center stage of the table for the first and the last meal Ji-yeong and King Yeonsangun eat together. As a symbol of the start and end of their complicated, time-intertwined relationship, the fusion dish perfectly captures the theme of the show.
From savory to sweet, the macarons, a classic French dessert, conquer not only the king’s appetite but also his heart. Typically, macarons contain fruit jam, butter cream and ganache. But to apply Korean flavor to the treat, Ji-yeong uses traditional Korean herbal plants such as gardenia and black sesame.
Ji-yeong’s artful culinary skills left me in awe—the adjustments kept the original structure of the macarons, but they elevated the flavor with a tint of Korean culture. The changes stemmed from necessity rather than preference, as Ji-yeong could not acquire the French ingredients, given the setting in Joseon Era, but her exceptional culinary skills made even the spontaneous decisions look deliberate.

The unique reactions and effects created by the backstage designers also kept me hooked throughout the series. Every dish triggers an old memory of theirs, helping them unite with the chef’s feelings through the meal. Such cinematic choices demonstrate how food can serve as a powerful tool for connection.
While the show mostly puts emphasis on cuisine, a K-drama isn’t complete without a hint of romance—the remarkable chemistry between Ji-yeong and King Yeonsangun brought a lovely side story.
Despite the 10-year age gap between the actors, they fully immerse themselves in the characters and depict the slow progression of romance. When the casting was first announced, I had a few doubts about whether they could convey the spark, yet their performances exceeded expectations, and the gap barely remained noticeable on screen.
Overall, “Bon Appetit, Your Majesty” introduces a fresh genre to the K-drama industry and stands out as a masterpiece. Beyond spotlighting Korean-French cuisine, it offers viewers a new perspective on how food can strengthen personal connections.
I would rate this series a 4.5/5—the rushed conclusion showed room for improvement, but as a whole, the drama impressed the global audience with immaculate performances, comical effects, and mouthwatering meals.
