Sometimes, even the slightest comments of encouragement might mask a hidden layer of bias and prejudice. Even in cases where people with disabilities might seem to require assistance, wait for them to ask for help instead of assuming they need it.

When awareness fosters stereotypes

Someone comes right up to your face and says, “Wow, you have big eyes for an Asian.” Sounds pretty insulting, don’t you think? Unfortunately, people with disabilities – who have zero control over the way they were born, just as we don't choose to have an Asian face – experience derogatory insults and microaggressions 24/7 365. 
Enter with caution: “The Glory” craze might lead you down a rabbit hole of the severity behind bullying in Korea.

Do Not Glorify the Glory

I binge-watched the viral Netflix original, “The Glory”, by Ahn Gilho in just one day. Although this entirely threw me off of my schedule, I don’t regret the impulsive decision – it was that entertaining. The show features Dong-eun, the protagonist, who is a victim of harsh school bullying. However, rather than falling into the pit of self-hatred, she plans a long-awaited revenge on the offenders. 
You can see activities that SOAR has been planning on the board on the 3rd floor.

SOAR Across the School

Amidst the return of lunch clubs, one stands out: SOAR (Speak Out Against Racism) is DIS’ first antiracism club. The extracurricular is intended to help middle and high schoolers become aware of the different forms of racism in the world, not only in the US. SOAR’s mission is to build a supportive community within DIS that actively opposes racism. It’s sure to make strides for keeping our student body conscientious.
