[Photos] High school girls’ volleyball caps up off its best season yet with one bronze, one silver and one gold

The JV and varsity teams gather alongside Coach Jolly and manager Olya Karpenko to celebrate their strongest season to date. United by grit and growth, the program capped the year with a full podium sweep, bringing home gold, silver and bronze across competitions.

The junior varsity and varsity girls’ volleyball team closed out their strongest season to date, earning top finishes at the SKAIS (South Korea Association of International Schools) and KISAC (Korean International Schools Activities Conference) tournaments. Varsity opened the season with a tough five set loss against DMHS (Daegu Middle High School), followed by a 3:0 defeat in the rematch, using the setbacks as early lessons in resilience and growth.

Rebounding from those challenges, varsity traveled to Jeju for the KISAC tournament and claimed bronze while JV took the home court advantage and claimed silver. Building on that momentum, the girls advanced to the SKAIS tournament, where JV secured a commanding championship victory, while varsity narrowly fell in an intense five set match against ISB. 

These standout performances highlighted the team’s growth and resilience, setting a foundation for the season ahead. “I appreciate everyone’s hard work and determination to the team. This year we had some really good leaders who will leave us and that is sad. But at the same time we have some really interesting players for next year,” said Coach Jolly.

Annie returns for her 3rd year on the Flyover staff as a section editor. As a junior she participates in various sports, extracurriculars, and Lunch Clubs. As an enthusiastic forensics student, she leads Science National Honor Society, MUN Club, Peer Tutoring Club, and Debate Club. In her free time, she enjoys books, TV shows, and shooting hoops with her friends. This year she hopes to share deeper and more investigative stories with the DIS community. 
Esther Choi
Esther Choi, Photography Director and Writer
With an observant eye for detail and a passion for finding the perfect shot, Esther has quickly made her mark on the DIS media team. From setting up cameras to editing videos, she takes pride in capturing the essence of school life in every shot. Outside of school media, Esther contributes to the community through the Yang-rowon Photo Service club, volunteering her photography skills for elders.
Mihini Edirisinghe
Mihini Edirisinghe, Broadcast Journalist and Photographer
Mihini Edirisinghe, a junior who loves video production and photography, pushes herself to direct videos anytime she’s free. She loves astronomy so much that she established an astronomical society Lunch Club. Mihini’s passion for music shines as she dances to pop music and plays piano and violin. She ranked fourth as an all island swimmer, basketball, netball, and handball player in her previous school. And now she dabbles in hockey and squash – a sports enthusiast to say the least. With her Model UN experience as delegate and head chair she brings extensive research and extroverted energy to any committee. People always notice her big smile and willingness to lend a hand. She looks forward to sharing her experiences from back home in Sri Lanka with DIS.

Ana Avaasuren enters her junior year as a photographer and designer for the yearbook. She joined the staff to share her attention to detail and her interest in visual storytelling. Off campus, she enjoys baking, piano, cafe hopping, and traveling. Ana finds inspiration in the experiences and people she encounters. Calm and cool, Ana lives in the dorm. She migrated to DIS last year from the plains of Mongolia.
Lily Lee
Lily Lee, Writer
Lily Lee returns to the staff with her wide smile and luscious hair. As she watches the clock tick, she reflects on whether or not her name will make a sports banner in the Jetnasium before graduation. Besides fame and glory in the gym, she hopes to leave her mark on the Jets Flyover before her departure. You’ll catch her on the court shooting hoops or buzzing around school on the lookout for mural locations.  Nonetheless, she takes great pride in her work ethic and her “tall” stature.

Christine enters her second year on staff as editor-in-chief of the yearbook and as a Jet Stream journalist. As a dedicated broadcast journalist and photographer, she aims to capture and share the school’s most compelling stories with creativity and enthusiasm, marking the finale of her high school career.
Olya Karpenko
Olya Karpenko, Social Media Manager and Photographer
Olya Karpenko starts her second year with the Jets Flyover. In her junior year, she contributed as an illustrator, but now she expands her skills to take on the role of social media manager. Through a strong passion for art, design, photography, and editing, Olya brings a creative eye to every project she takes on. Outside of school, she enjoys music, TV, and of course, catching up on sleep.

Leewen Wang, Photographer
Junior, Liwen Wang, an OG member of the DIS community, steps in this year as a dedicated yearbook photographer. She captures the spirit and stories of campus life through her lens. Outside of the classroom, you’ll see Liwen leading her varsity volleyball and soccer teams as captain, rooting for the Samsung Lions, or snapping action shots on the sidelines. In her free time, she loves to hang out with family and friends and travel the globe in search of new adventures. Liwen also takes on leadership roles in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, National Honor Society, High School Student Council, and Key Club.
