Although tryouts have gifted DIS success in sports tournaments, some posit that they take the chance away from prospective athletes.

Volleyball tryouts do not lead to net gains

Imagine this: as after-school activities commence, excitement fills the air. Yet, amidst anticipation, a pressing concern looms in the gym — tryouts. For some, it may seem like an opportunity to showcase their skills, but for many, it acts as a path fraught with uncertainty and potential exclusion. The discussion around this new procedure with sports practice first took off last year. Proponents argue that an abundance of players leads to reduced game time for each individual, which hinders the team’s overall development. Safety issues and stagnated athlete performance also emerge from this problem. But is this the whole story?

The new volleyball season commenced as 36 girls and 24 boys battled for a spot on the varsity teams. Recent SKAC championships and the success of the Japanese animation ‘Haikyuu’ fueled the popularity of the sport, encouraging more individuals to challenge themselves. Strangely, though, less students signed up for the squad this year compared to previous years — it seems that the stigma of failure, admission requirements, and rivalry among friends secretly played a role in this decrease in members.

Athletics at DIS are sometimes used as a ‘resume builder.’ Sure, there are athletes who dedicate their time and effort to play the sport, but some students join the team for an additional glitter on their resume. With many universities wanting well-rounded students, those, especially international students, sign up for teams without true passion, but for an application boost.
