SOAR leads mission to eradicate discriminatory language on campus

Students Organizing Against Racism (SOAR) conducted an anonymous survey in the last week of February to expose the discriminatory language — hidden phrases that allow students to mock and exclude others right in front of teachers without detection. The data collected serves as a crucial tool to identify these terms and provide real examples at the weekly Wednesday educators’ meeting on May 7th, to help the faculty gain awareness and foster a safer, more inclusive school community.
Although largely homogeneous, many international schools portray a different picture on their advertisements to attract potential clients.

International school websites flaunt a harmonious mix of multiethnic students mingled together. But walk the halls of Korean international school campuses and something strikes you: the stark difference between expectation and reality. In truth, Koreans comprise up to 80% of the student body in international schools nationwide. This contrast arises from tokenism, a marketing technique that feigns diversity to attract naive potential attendees.

Diversity consultant guides consortium of international schools through EARCOS Weekend Workshop

To embrace the four pillars of DEIB — diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging — DIS met with Jessica Wei Huang, an educational equity consultant, and constructed a panel to learn about the school’s sense of “belonging” within the student body. With the freshly equipped spirit of determination, Huang hosted a workshop for the East Asia Regional Council of Schools(EARCOS) the next day.
