The DIS girls’ basketball team faced off against the Daegu Middle High school (DMHS) on Dec. 15 in an aggressive matchup. Despite an encouraging first half with the Jets in the lead, DIS fell to the Warriors 30 to 10.
Following the JV boys’ intense match, the girls stepped onto the court, with Apple Jun (7) as point guard, Minori Kojima (9) as shooting guard, Juyeon Kim (24) as small forward, Luisa Silva (34) as power forward, and Bonnie Kim (6) as center.
The Jets kicked off strong, with the Jets taking the first four points with Silva (34)’s jump shot and Jun (7)’s layup. “I think our first two halves weren’t bad, and our strategies felt like they were working,” said rookie varsity small forward Kim (24). “Our communication was good, and I heard my name a thousand times — which helped me a lot.”
Despite the solid start, the girls quickly fell behind, missing uncontested shots. DMHS varsity shooting guard K.T. Green said, “I feel like they were good. I feel like they had a whole lot of shot opportunities but just none of them were following.”
On the same page, Kim (24) said, “We tried to shoot a lot and had a lot of opportunities, but they weren’t going in.”
Coupled with low momentum, the game grew physical. “The game was good, but it was also very aggressive,” said Green. Players from both teams quickly grew frustrated and overwhelmed.
“We were really stressed out, getting a lot of fouls and missed shots. I think that affected our play. I think we didn’t play our best, so I was a little disappointed,” said varsity shooting guard Kojima (9).
Even in defeat, the game served as a valuable learning opportunity for the Jets. Looking forward to their next match against DMHS on Jan. 27., the girls stand eager to step up their game. Kim (24) said, “I want to practice more drills to the point that our bodies react instinctually to the routines,” specifically pointing out the team’s lack of familiarity with their in-bound plays.
Echoing the same sentiment, Kojima (9) said, “I hope we can fill in the gaps that we found with our first game of the season and communicate better as a team. I want us to practice more shooting drills for sure, because we missed a lot of shots, as well as passing and dribbling exercises.”
The team now braces for further improvements. “We are definitely going to practice at game-speed with the same rapid pace and pushing during practice because we all realized how different our practices were to the actual game,” Kojima (9) said.
As the Jets regroup after the season-opener, the girls sharpen their focus with a clearer understanding of the game. The team looks to address gaps in communication, pace, physicality and execution as they prepare for a more competitive performance in January.
