Most people consider mechanical pencils as simple writing tools. For me, they are more than that. After eight years of collecting and using mechanical pencils, I’ve repeatedly asked myself one question: What qualities define an exceptional mechanical pencil? I’ve come to a conclusion of four key elements – design, grip, length, and the lead slot.
Among my collection, the mechanical pencil I consider the finest is LAMY’s “Logo Mechanical Pencil Steel/Black 0.5mm,” a writing utensil I have relied on since freshman year. The balance and length are exceptional. As the saying goes, “Simple is the best.” At 14 centimeters in length, the pencil avoids the use of flashy colors, featuring only steel silver and black. Although steel writing tools are commonly thought of as having poor grip, the carefully carved grooves prevent slipping and provide a near-perfect grip.
