Elementary volleyball spikes into action

The elementary Jets volleyball teams traveled to Atherton International School (AIS) to compete at the SKAC Divisionals on Jan. 26th. Athletes enjoyed a day of volleyball with their peers and challenged each other against their newly formed rivals.

29 teams from several schools across Korea gathered in total. DIS took 10 teams and divided each player based on individual abilities. The high popularity of volleyball overcrowded the tournament. Out-of-control balls flew around the cramped gym and interfered with matches. “The court was so tiny and sometimes the volleyball came into our court (from the other court) so we had to stop the game and redo it so that wasn’t that good, ” said Henry Cha in fourth grade.

Despite the space and size setback, the ballers exhibited success. They enjoyed the competitive spirit of the meet and honed their skills. “I had a lot of fun winning and cheering for our team and cooperating and communicating with each other. When I lost I felt upset but as time passed, I was having fun. After I watched some A teams play, I think I learned how we set and bump and serve,” said Irene Lee in fourth grade.

David Hur eyes down the ball to pass it to his teammate. David sets with control to play for the point. (Luna Kang)

The day ended in satisfaction as student-athletes took leaps of improvement. Student coach Christine Mason said, “The girls and boys need to know what they did wrong so they improve by thinking what they had to do better. So I think that’s how they improved.”

Joseph Cho stares down his opponent as they shake hands. Joseph’s competitive spirit serves as motivation for great improvement. (Luna Kang)

The elementary Jets volleyball teams returned to Geoje island for the SKAC finals on Feb. 14th back at AIS. Three trophies greet students at the front foyer of the cafeteria. Look forward to a detailed report on the finals in the Flyover sports section.
