Despite the wrist injury I perpetually complain about, I always gravitate to the camera stash in the newsroom before school events. This year, I pushed the boundaries and broke the #1 rule of Flyover photography that even students who aren’t on the staff know: full-body, head-to-toe.
For the photo of fourth-grader Viviana Kwon during her Gayageum performance, I boldly cropped her head and toes out of the angle. In a photo of freshman Azul Rivera rocking it out on the drums, I honed in on the action – her arms, not her feet. At the same time, some other photos, such as the photo where Rivera lunges at her opponent, followed the formula to capture a dynamic moment.
As I sign off for the year, my photography portfolio reminds me of the most important rule of all: break the rules when it feels right.
