My mom used to stroke my hair as we sang familiar tunes in the dark, lulling me to sleep. Now, those same lyrics make my eyes burn. I’m grateful for these memories — for the love and comfort they hold — when I think of my mother.
She is the woman who birthed me, the woman who trusts and supports me, sometimes more than I can trust and support myself. These songs, and the specific versions I recommend, are for everyone — but especially for daughters. The bond between two women, a mother and her daughter, strikes a uniquely ethereal chord.
I leave you with a lyric from the first song, Mother to Daughter:
“Even if you don’t tell me,
I know you love me more than anyone,
So I can confidently say that my dream is to make you happy.”
