How linguistics affect pronouns

Selina Son, Dylan Wang, Leanne Yoon, and Catherine Park October 3, 2023
“My pronouns are God now,” or “You look like a man, so I’ll call you ‘he.’” Such hurtful phrases often pop up in discussions of gender identity and its labels. Some might jump to conclusions or get aggressive in reaction to the supposed blatant lack of care for minorities. But let us step back, and take it easy.

Ms. Son and Ms. Morissette’s 5th-grade class shared their projects about human rights with other students, teachers, and administrators on March 10th. They created a variety of displays that provided heaps of information. Each exhibit had a unique flair to deliver important details about what they learned.

“That’s so gay” was a common insult in the 80s and 90s, but somehow, this low level jab survived to see the light of the 21st century despite a constantly growing voice for the rights of the LGBTQ community. It’s legal to fire employees for their sexual orientation in Korea. Gay marriage is still prohibited, and anti-LGBTQ communities are ever so active. How can this society change to be more welcoming and inclusive? I do not know. What I do know, though, is that the first step is to start speaking up about it.

Fifth Grade Proudly Presents Human Rights

Justin Park , Mikey Pierog, and Alyssa Chang April 17, 2022
On the first of April, the 5th graders led by Ms. Morissette presented their big projects to the entire school. As part of their social studies unit, the bright young stars of DIS brought together their research on various topics related to human rights, such as corporate human rights violations, historic advancements and setbacks within the topic, or even student’s prerogatives at DIS. The presentation was a massive success as it resonated with teachers, admins, and other students.
