As J&J Catering steps in as the new lunch provider for the 25-26 school year, they also take over the cafeteria Snack Shop. The store officially opened during the second week of school. Students harbor mixed opinions about the new items in stock.
The store now offers healthier treats compared to previous years. “We’re currently operating the Snack Shop by first submitting the list to the principal and only displaying items that have been confirmed. We tried to select healthier snacks with less sugar,” J&J Catering Cafeteria Manager Yeonjoeng Kim said.
Although the focus on nutrition aligns with school guidelines, students expressed concern about the limited variety. “There are not really many gummies or candies. I think the variety has gotten way less since back then we used to have more shelves than now,” eighth grader Sophia Sung said.
Elementary schoolers shared this opinion as well. “They used to sell things like toys, too, and the food selection isn’t very diverse. I wish they would sell a wider variety of snacks like they used to,” third grader Alya Choi said.

On the other hand, some students welcomed the addition of whole foods. “I was quite disappointed with the unhealthy food they produced last year. Before I work out, I always want a little bit of protein. However, there weren’t many healthy snacks, but this year, there are eggs, beef jerky, and low-calorie drinks,” senior William Seok said.
Similarity, students expressed their liking for the treats offered. “Although there are less sweets to choose from, I like how there are more different types of drinks we can choose from compared to last year. I actually think that this year’s options are both more healthier and tastier,” said junior Flora Yoon.
Students pointed out issues with replacements of sold-out items as well. “I hope they stock snacks more efficiently because sometimes they’re out of stock quickly. I think they get a supply from a truck once a week or something, but even on Tuesday or Wednesday, there aren’t many snacks I can choose from,” Seok said.
J&J encourages student feedback to enhance the Snack Shop’s service. “You can talk to us directly, or submit a suggestion through the school system. If there’s a specific type you would like, we are always willing to consider it,” Kim said. “So whether you talk to your teachers or come to us directly, we would appreciate it. We will do our best to accommodate what the students want.”
