Cartoons sneak into our hearts in special ways—sometimes in the most unconventional manner. Whether it’s a childhood comfort or just a character that gives off an unforgettable vibe, everyone holds that one animated character with a singular place in their memory. Who is your unexpected cartoon obsession?

Sarah Cho, Grade 9

My favorite cartoon character was Pororo. I always watched it when I was little. Whenever I was really depressed or when I would cry, my parents would always show me Pororo. I think all the episodes were really fun, and I think Pororo looks really cute. I loved Pororo to the point where I even bought a doll.

Louie Song, Grade 12

Sally from Cars. I had a crush on Sally. I would sometimes tell this to my close friends, and no one could really understand me. But I still stand by this idea because she's a great supporter of Lightning McQueen. She's kind, and she’s a Porsche. She’s cool-looking.

Gia Park, Grade 3

Minions because the movie is fun. My favorite minion is Bob, the one holding the doll with two eyes. He’s really cute. I really like teddy bears, and I like that he’s holding one teddy bear.

Ryan Bae, Grade 4

I like SpongeBob because he’s unique. I like his personality. He is a little dumb, but he cares for a lot of other people. Even though many people don’t like him, he doesn’t care about it, and moves on.

Dr. Willette, Secondary Principal

Most recently, I think it was the droid in Solo: A Star Wars Story, L3-37. She was the one who helped the Millennium Falcon make the Kessel Run in record time. When she died, I was really sad. She was tough, she knew a lot of things, and she was faithful and loyal to Lando.

Jayden Hayward, Grade 10

I liked the water from Moana. I felt like the water had a very caring demeanor. It was very nice and gentle towards the people, especially Moana.

Jenny Lee, Grade 11

I liked Jack Frost. Every time I watched Jack Frost on YouTube Kids, I could feel my heart racing. Jack Frost looks like a nice person and also has a very nonchalant demeanor.

Yitong Li, Grade 2

Mermaids, because mermaids spin all day long. I like mermaids a lot because of that. I specifically like mermaids that have rainbow tails.

I loved Marge Simpson. I love Marge’s voice and charisma. I also love her dress and her necklace. When I was little, I really wanted Marge’s pearl necklace— I love her style overall.

Conrad Hutchings, Music Teacher

There was a scene in the movie Aladdin where Aladdin steals a piece of bread from a street merchant. Aladdin then cuts it in half and gives it to Abu. And at that moment, when Abu bites the bread, the bread looks so tasty, and so I was obsessed with wanting to eat this bread. The other one was in The Lion King when Rafiki breaks open the fruit he used to put on Simba’s forehead. When he breaks open the fruit later in the movie, he sits in his tree and eats it. And in this moment, too, I reacted with a strong, “Ooh, what's he eating? I want some!”

Olivia Cho, Grade 7

I like the Roblox avatar. The one with the man face, with the smile and dimples. The smile on the avatar is a one-sided smirk, which makes him look confident and attractive.

Hwang Hae-jeong, Custodian

I really liked the character Oscar in the manga The Rose of Versailles. I liked his charisma and neutral personality that was neither too feminine nor too masculine.

The DIS community has some truly unique and heartfelt cartoon obsessions, from quirky sidekicks to mysterious avatars. These picks show just how creative and personal our connections to characters can be. Sometimes, it’s those unexpected favorites that reveal the most about who we are.

Apple, a sophomore and avid writer, returns for her second year on the Jets Flyover staff. Determined to immerse herself in all aspects of the DIS community, she participates in an array of lunch clubs and ASAs including MUN, SKAC sports, and Jets Flyover. In her leisure time, she loves to read or listen to music. You can often find her tucked away in a corner with a good show or under the covers with her nose buried in her all-time favorite novel – Pride and Prejudice.

As an expat, Tamara finishes high school at DIS, her sixth country she calls home. A self-discoverer, she enjoys people, culture, and the arts. Her flexibility and extrovertedness allows her to connect with others easily. With her skill set in the arts, she embraces creativity through illustrations and tales of her travels. Tamara’s interests include movies, tourism, reading, and drawing. As a second-year staff member, she wants to inspire others and bring positive impact to the newsroom.
