Daegu, often dubbed “Daefrica” (대프리카), holds a reputation for its dry and hot climate. So, winters rarely bring any frost. However, an uncommon snowfall hit the city, and students enjoyed a blizzard bash on Feb. 7.
On the morning of the 7th, a record heavy snow advisory was issued for several regions, which included Daegu. By 8 a.m., a pile of 0.7 cm accumulated. Forecasts predicted an additional 1 to 8 cm of snowfall by nightfall. Authorities informed residents to caution due to icy roads and low temperatures, with daytime numbers that ranged from -6°C to 1°C.
Daegu experienced a second unprecedented snowfall on the 12th, which added to the unusual winter weather for the region. Strong snow of 1 to 3 cm per hour was expected by morning. Seventh grader Eddie Kim said, “When I saw the snow, I was surprised because of the amount of it coming down. But I had lots of fun with my friends watching the snow falling and throwing snowballs at each other.”
The unexpected snowfall transformed the campus into a winter wonderland. Second grader Elena Nam shared her excitement: “It was really interesting to see the snow because it doesn’t usually snow in Daegu. I made snowballs and a snowman with my friends and had a lot of fun.” Youngsters embraced the rare occasion and built multiple snowmen across the playground.
While the sprinkles brought excitement, it also came with challenges. Mr. Bergan, the athletic director, said, “We had a KISAC tournament hosted by DIS on the 7th, and when it snowed, I checked to make sure that the tournament would happen. Once we found that out, we made sure that there was a clear path for the teams to come into the gym. The only thing we made sure was to make sure the kids don’t go outside and bring the moisture of the snow into the gym.”
The unexpected flakes brought a buzz to campus, and students turned the fields into a snow-filled festival. The second snowfall on the 12th stuck to the ground much more than the first whiteout, which led to larger snowmen. However, the snow froze, creating icy conditions. This prompted DIS admin to issue safety warnings. Blockades covered the stairs and courts to make sure students would avoid potential hazards. The rare weather conditions brought unforgettable memories to the community.
