The elementary futsal teams traveled to the International School of Busan (ISB) on Nov. 13 for the South Korea Association of International Schools (SKAIS) Finals, facing a field of six schools eager for victory. Both the girls and boys entered the competition with a clear goal: a championship trophy.
DIS A and B boys dominated and maintained a strong lead throughout the day. With an unbeaten record, both entered the finals, where the A team boys demonstrated their exceptional skill and easily secured their victory as they beat ISB seven to one in the finals. The B team boys suffered a narrow loss, defeated by a slim, one point difference to ISB. The varsity boys returned home as undefeated champs, with gold medals and a trophy to mark their all-season success, while the junior varsity boys proudly sported their silver medals.
Weejee Kung in fourth grade said, “I was sad because we lost in the finals, but it was still really fun. I was proud of how we played and I think I shot a lot of goals.”
The A girls also dominated the field, finishing strong in second place while the B team placed first. Varsity girls faced a few close calls, and tied with Busan Foreign School (BFS) and Gyeongnam International Foreign School (GIFS) in the round robin. Although Joy Cha in fifth grade, their star player got injured, they ultimately prevailed and came up just short of first place in the finals, where they lost to GIFS 2:0.
Irene Lee in fifth grade said, “I was a little sad because we lost to GIFS in the finals, but I’m really proud of everyone and think we played well. The GIFS team was also very nice, so we lost the game, but made a lot of friends.”
Student coach Minori Kojima in 11th grade, especially pleased with the girls’ victories against tough teams, said, “There was one BFS player who was much bigger and stronger than our girls. She would often boot the ball away from the goal when our forwards got too close. Many times, she accidentally missed and kicked the DIS girls’ shins, causing some injuries. Despite this, DIS tied with BFS, which made me really proud.”
The boys’ C team also left a lasting impression as they only faced one loss and ended second in their division. The girls’ C team also showed remarkable improvement, and triumphed over ISB. The teams’ amazing results are a testament to their commitment and hard work. With every practice, they grew stronger, and their dedication paid off in a spectacular finish.
The Jets’ gold and silver medal victories stand as a proud achievement, marking the end of a season full of success and teamwork. As they celebrate this well-earned triumph, they look ahead with hope and determination, eager to carry their winning spirit into next year’s season.
