*Disclaimer: This article contains spoilers about the novel “Powerless”
I gasp as Paedyn Gray, an ordinary with no special powers, plunges into the deadly trials of the elites. Captivated by the suspense, I lost track of time as the hours slipped by. A phenomenal literary piece, “Powerless” by Lauren Roberts masterfully blends the plots of “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins and “Red Queen” by Victoria Aveyard.
The story takes place in the kingdom of Ilya, where powerful “elites” who possess magical powers banish and kill civilians out of fear that the “ordinaries” will steal their gifts. In this dystopian society, Paedyn’s father conceals his daughter’s lack of power at all costs and teaches her to feign the status of a Psychic, a minor elite.
Paedyn vows to avenge her father’s death after the elites slaughter him because of his status. However, her plan takes an unexpected twist when she saves the life of Kai, the prince of Ilya, and ultimately takes part in the trials of the elites.
Throughout the entire narrative, Roberts dashes in intricate elements in spades–the rivals-to-lovers romance trope, leaving Paedyn lost at the fork of the road between two brothers with polar opposite natures. The author also harmonizes vivid details into a whirlwind of laughter, wit and tears. “Powerless” keeps readers on a tightrope as Paedyn struggles to balance survival with her blooming feelings for the prince, all while veiling her true identity.
Worlds collide as ordinaries enter the realm of the elites and villains turn into heroes. Paedyn’s greatest adversaries emerge as allies, and unforeseen changes challenge her perceptions and beliefs about the kingdom.
Amidst these upheavals, Paedyn and Kai form a bond that deepens through their shared trials. Their palpable connection adds an endearing layer to the chaos, and their moments together resonate with emotional depth. Their mutual support serves as a beacon of hope that warms the hearts of the readers.
A twist inevitably exists in a good romance; it keeps the plot suspenseful and leaves readers to crave more. Nothing lasts forever, and the same applies to Paedyn and Kai’s vibrant relationship. Things take a sharp turn for the worse when Paedyn discovers that Kai killed her father. She experiences severe internal turmoil and grapples with her affection and bitterness for Kai as the novel draws to a close. Will love truly conquer all?
“Powerless” embodies a chef’s kiss of a novel that intricately weaves electric tension, playful banter and each character’s distinct personalities. Five stars simply don’t do the novel justice, as it surpasses exceptional. It throws readers into the depths of Ilya and troubles them while they struggle to move on from the riveting novel.
The story of Roberts’ writing process, much like the book itself, reflects an inspirational journey. Roberts started the novel at the young age of 18 as she chased her dreams to grow into an accomplished and loved author. Her story and “Powerless” motivated me to foster my love for writing and tackle the unique perks of the literary process.
If you want to read a powerful and enthralling novel that expertly combines romance, mystery, fantasy as well as action, definitely read “Powerless” and its equally compelling sequels.
